From JESPY House:
JESPY House welcomed Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Bill Brennan on Wednesday night to discuss Healthcare Issues, Changes in DDD funding and issues that impact Community Inclusion, housing and other vital issues that impact the client’s daily lives. Eighty constituents from the JESPY community and surrounding areas listened to Mr. Brennan’s positions on issues affecting the state of New Jersey, issues on the disabled population, asked questions and voiced their concerns.
JESPY House is a community-based nonprofit in South Orange, NJ. It assists more than 250 clients in leading independent lives. Executive Director, Audrey Winker stated that we “invited Mr. Brennan to learn about our agency, clients and the integral part they play in contributing to the Village economy” We need to inform our advocates how these proposed changes will impact our community, directly from us- clients, staff, family members, board members and allies”.
Changes to the state funding, “Medicaid Fee-For- Service will cut our reimbursement rates in July. The impact on our clients could be catastrophic and cut resources for job training clinical and behavioral supports, residential housing and transportation for many of our clients who don’t drive. Our community is worried on how this will impact our clients’ rights to live independently.
During the evening’s discussion, Mr. Brennan discussed his platform which includes renewable energy sources, legalization of marijuana, improving public transportation and rebuilding our state’s crumbling bridges and highways.
One thing was clear from the onset of the evening, Brennan pledged his support to the clients of JESPY House, and at one point, asked his opponent Phil Murphy (D) to contribute a million dollars to JESPY, in order to improve its sustainability.
The JESPY House Community has been meeting with state and federal legislators to raise awareness about the proposed DDD/ Medicaid cuts.
