The Village Green has invited the ten candidates for the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education to submit statements for publication, which we will run as we receive them. Election day is November 7, 2017.
Hi, I’m Lucas Calhoun and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the SOMSD Board of Education. I have a diverse background in education as a teacher and as an administrator. I believe that in any oversight body, diversity of thought and experience are paramount to bringing productive change.
We currently have a Board full of dedicated and passionate public servants, several of whom have been in the school district for many years, and this election features an embarrassment of riches in terms of public engagement and service: I am running alongside nine other candidates! What allows me to stand out amongst these fine people is an experienced outsider’s perspective. My family and I have been in Maplewood just under two years. We can plainly see that while SOMSD is unique, many of its major challenges are not. Schools districts of all sizes throughout the country, including Los Angeles where I did much of my educational work, are struggling to address the disparity between needs and resources. In the coming months I look forward to the exchange of ideas and sharing my experiences and plans for the future of our schools. I believe I can harness the talents of our community to empower our teachers and administrators to better serve our students. I hope you will allow me to serve you on our Board of Education.
