From the SOMA School Supply Donation Drive:
We’re excited to write to you about the 2019 SOMA [South Orange-Maplewood] School Donations Drive. Our mission is to make sure the children in our school district have the school supplies they need to be successful from day one, whether or not they can afford them.
We are a group of locals, some with children in the district, who were inspired to carry on the work initiated by Sharon Duberman Geraghty. Sharon worked tirelessly for the children in the South Orange-Maplewood School District [SOMSD] in many ways, including this drive. When Sharon passed away in 2017, we were determined to not only continue her mission but to grow its impact each year.
Now in its 5th year, this drive collects school supplies for donation to our district’s children at Maplewood Middle School, South Orange Middle School and Columbia High School. We’re increasing our overall reach this year by teaming up with the Maplewood Police Benevolent Association Local 44, which is collecting supplies for donation to the elementary schools. Our goal this year is to collect enough supplies to fill at least 70 backpacks for distribution by the start of the school year. We work with the school district’s social workers and Karen Weiland of the district’s Parenting Center to manage which children are most in need and to determine how the backpacks are distributed.
If you would like to contact us, spread the word, and get updates on the drive, please join the Facebook group, “SOMA School Supply Donations.” If you have any questions, please post in that group or private message us through the group.
Attached is a printable flyer with the items we are collecting — as well as dropoff locations. We also created an Amazon wish list to facilitate purchase/delivery:
Deadline for delivery to dropoff locations is August 25. We will be sorting and packing at The Woodland, thanks to Maplewood Township Committee member Nancy Adams. We will receive last minute donations on Monday, August 26th at The Woodland, starting at 10 a.m.
We hope to make this school year a success for all of our district’s children. Thank you.
