Student organizers from Maplewood and South Orange came together with community leaders and SOMA Action in Maplewood and South Orange to rally in support of gun violence prevention on Saturday, March 24th. The rallies were part of the worldwide March for Our Lives movement.
“We stand with and support victims of gun violence and mass shootings,” said the SOMA Student Leadership Committee in a release. “We hope by speaking out and standing up we will empower all students to use their voice as powerful agents of change and finally move from inaction to action on sensible gun control.”
Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca reported that there was “Great Maplewood participation in Saturday’s March for Our Lives in Newark. Our early rally Maplewood was also well attended and very inspiring. Thanks to the youth leadership who organized today’s rallies.”
One student at the Maplewood station rally was reported to say, “When you go to school you should only have to worry about learning…not your life.”
