SOMA Justice and SOMA Action teamed up this Holiday season to put some new lyrics to old caroling classics and hit the streets of South Orange and Maplewood with their political puns.
Their “Holiday Jeer” caroling caught the attention of WNYC reporter and Maplewood resident Nancy Solomon who covered the tuneful protests in this segment.
SOMA Action organizer Amy Higer has made the song books available while supplies last. Those interested can contact her via Facebook for a copy.
The carolers did hit a snag one night when police officers cleared them from the Maplewood Train Station saying they needed a permit; the action resulted in an apology from the Acting Police Chief Jim DeVaul who assured the group that no permit was needed and that future caroling would go ahead unimpeded.
South Orange Village President Sheena Collum (seen in the video below with Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca) posted this message on Facebook along with vthe ideo:
“#SOMAResistance Carolers live from the South Orange Train Station w/ SOMa Action! Happy Holidays to Donald J. Trump from South Orange & Maplewood, two proud Sanctuary Cities where we believe Black Lives Matter, Women’s Rights are Human Rights, No Human is Illegal, Science is Real, Love is Love and Kindness is Everything.#Resist.”
