The Maplewood Township Committee held a moment of silence at its meeting on September 15, 2026, for Florence Magyar.
Mayor Vic De Luca shared this remembrance: “Florence passed away on September 14, at the age of 101. She was a lifelong Maplewood resident. She was very active in our senior citizens program. She’s a former member of the pool advisory committee. She’s a member of the Maplewood Community Pool. She’s on the executive board of the Hilton Neighborhood Association. She lives down the street from [Township Committee member Jane] Collins-Colding and I. She’s a treasured part of our community. She’ll be greatly missed by her many friends and neighbors and all that had the pleasure of knowing her. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.”

Maplewood’s Director of Community Services Melissa Mancuso remembered Magyar in a heartfelt Facebook post on September 14.
“She was born here, and also took her last breath in her own home,” wrote Mancuso. “The same home she lived in for 101 years. That fact simply astounds me.”
Noting that Magyar had “many friends,” Mancuso reported, “She had a great laugh, and over the years she made me laugh a lot, and she shared many ‘not complaints’ with me. I truly loved summers at the pool with Flo. Lazy days outstretched in the sun, taking a dip when ‘it’s so hot out here! Even under this tent!'”

“Not married, no kids…..I just had to take the opportunity on her 99th birthday to have our kids campers sing to her,” wrote Mancuso. “Then we learned one of our counselors shared the birthday- and these 2 became fast birthday buddies.”
“Goodbye for now Flo,” wrote Mancuso. “Godspeed, Florence. I will miss just knowing you were holding down your corner of the neighborhood.”
