The following is a press release from SOMA Action. The views and opinions expressed in this release are those of SOMA Action and do not necessarily reflect those of the editors:
On Monday, Feb. 18 at noon, SOMA Action will join with hundreds of activist groups around the country to protest Trump’s #FakeEmergency over a fake crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. “The only crisis that exists at the border is of Trump’s own making. He has violated the basic human and legal rights of asylum-seekers, and separated families,” said SOMA Action Trustee Kelly Quirk. SOMA Action will protest with Make the Road New Jersey, an immigrant rights group, and other local grassroots organizations, at the Federal Building in Newark at 970 Broad Street.
SOMA Action members and local residents who wish to take part in this protest will gather at the South Orange Train Station at 10:45 a.m. (under the Gazebo) to take the 10:57 a.m. train from South Orange. Or, meet up at the demonstration in Newark.
Bring signs expressing your outrage at this obscene abuse of presidential power and Trump’s further destruction of democratic norms. As Rebecca Scheer, Chair of SOMA Action’s Political Action Committee, says: “There IS an emergency in the country, but it is not at the border, it is in the White House.”
