Early Thursday, June 26, Livingston native Brendan Tevlin, 19, was found shot to death in West Orange. Police are investigating the crime.

By all accounts, Tevlin, a Seton Hall Prep grad who had just finished his freshman year at the University of Richmond, was an exceptional young man.

Tevlin was the oldest of four children in a large extended family. He was the grandson of retired Maplewood firefighter Tom Tevlin and nephew to Maplewood Fire Deputy Chief Joseph Callaghan.

In an email exchange, Callaghan described Tevlin as “a straight-A kid, Eucharistic minister at church, first-year honor student at the University of Richmond, a lacrosse player at Seton Hall Prep, a surfer, a great cousin to my children, a great brother to three younger siblings, an all-around wonderful, loving, caring kid.”

Callaghan described Tevlin’s death as “unreal” and said he had “no words.”

The Village Green extends its condolences to the Tevlin and Callaghan families.
