Kareem Dawson, 31, of Irvington, has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Tiffany Wilson, 28, of Newark.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reports that at 8 a.m. yesterday Newark Police responded to a shooting in the 100 block of Scheerer Avenue in Newark. “When they arrived on the scene they discovered a
woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to University Hospital
where she was pronounced dead.”
Police pursued Dawson to Summit, NJ “at which point the suspect suffered a non-fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He is currently being treated at an area hospital. … He is facing murder charges.”
In December, Dawson attacked Wilson, after she dropped off one of their children at a day care center at 495 Valley Street in Maplewood. At that time, Dawson followed Wilson to her car, tried to push her across the seat, then pulled her from the car and to the ground before fleeing the seen in his vehicle. He was later arrested in Woodbridge. Reports are that he had taken their older child from a separate day care in Inglewood earlier that day and had fled with that child.
Although Dawson had been arrested for this and another domestic violence incident as well as on weapons charges, he had been freed. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka told media, “Together, we need to look at the downgrading of charges by prosecutors, especially in cases of domestic violence, and to fix the serious flaws in bail reform.”
