On Tuesday during dismissal at Maplewood Middle School a student was stuck by a vehicle on Baker Street, according to a letter to parents from Principal Kevin Mason.
According to Mason, the child was seen by the school nurse and Emergency Medical Services, and, in “an abundance of caution,” was taken to a “local medical facility for further evaluation.”
Because the child was not using a crosswalk when the accident took place, Mason asked parents to talk with students about using safety precautions around traffic and when crossing the street.
The Village Green as reached out to the Maplewood Police Department for the incident report and will update the story.

Dear MMS Families,
Today during dismissal, one of our students was struck by a vehicle on Baker Street.
Thankfully, our administration immediately brought the student safely back into the building, where our school nurse conducted an initial assessment. Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Maplewood Police Department, and the student’s parents were contacted right away. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for their well-being, the student was transported to a local medical facility for further evaluation.
Our deepest thoughts are with the student and their family as we send our warmest wishes for a quick and full recovery.
While members of the Maplewood Police Department were present at dismissal and actively assisting at the crosswalk, the student involved did not cross at the designated crossing area. We are deeply grateful for the swift response of our staff and emergency personnel, but this incident serves as a painful reminder of how quickly a situation can turn dangerous around moving traffic.
We ask that you please take time tonight to talk with your child about practicing pedestrian safety:
- Use Crosswalks:Â Always cross the street at designated crosswalks and intersections.
- Follow Guidance:Â Pay close attention to crossing guards and police officers directing traffic.
- Stay Alert:Â Look both ways before stepping off the curb and make eye contact with drivers when possible.
- Avoid Impulsive Movements:Â Never step, walk, or run into traffic between parked cars or outside of marked safe zones.
These safety practices are especially vital during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal when traffic around our school is heaviest.
