Maplewood Acting Police Chief Jim DeVaul wants to reassure residents that police are working to ensure their safety in the neighborhood where a fatal shooting took place last weekend.
In an email sent this afternoon, DeVaul wrote that police continue to work with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office on the active homicide investigation. He invited anyone with information to contact the ECPO Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force with tips at 1-877-847-7432.
On Saturday March 24, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Altariq A. Brown, 30, of Livingston was fatally wounded by gun fire near 1553 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:35 p.m.

Good afternoon as an update to the homicide that occurred at approx 815pm on 3/24/18 at 1553 Springfield Ave, I want to reassure the community (residents and proprietors) that the Maplewood Police is monitoring the area by way of increased foot patrols and high visibility inspections. This is an active investigation and we are working collaboratively with the Essex County Prosecutors Office. As the investigation continues, further information will be released as it becomes available and at a time when such communication will not impede the investigation. I want to remind community members “if you see something, say something” Please report all suspicious persons, vehicles or activity by calling 911 or the Maplewood Police directly at 973-762-1234.
