Maplewood police arrested a Holmdel man for allegedly robbing and using tools to threaten two women walking on Springfield Avenue near Chancellor Avenue on Saturday night, said Sgt. Christopher Black.

At around 7:45 p.m., Gregory Hines, age 55, came up behind the two women, allegedly grabbing one and threatening her with a screwdriver and a hammer, said Black. As Hines and the woman struggled over her purse, a good Samaritan driving by stopped to help and was able to detain Hines, said Black.

Hines was taken into custody and charged with robbery, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. He was transported to Essex County Jail.
