From the Maplewood Police Department:
The Maplewood Township Police Department is seeking applicants to participate in the “Junior Police Academy” during the week of August 26 -30 for Maplewood Residents in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. One of the biggest components of how the Maplewood Township Police Department operates is through Community Oriented Policing. We have many officers that participate in teaching L.E.A.D. (Law Enforcement Against Drugs), which helps build relationships between students and officers in the elementary schools as well as participating in after school programs such as The Hub and The Loft. The “Junior Police Academy” would be a way to continue to grow the bond between the police department and the youth of our community while they continue their educational experience.
The “Junior Police Academy” will help show the participants how a police department functions and serves its community on an everyday basis. It is very important for the young men and women to be able to see that the job of a police officer may be very different from what they may have seen on television or read on the internet. The “Junior Police Academy” is nothing new to the residents of Maplewood as the police department as successfully organized this program for the past three years. These experiences have helped to foster many strong relationships between Maplewood Police Officers and the youth of the community.
Applications will be made available on Friday, April 12 at the dispatch window. Applications can also be accessed at (www.maplewoodpd.org). The deadline for the application process is Friday June 1, 2019.
