A man was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit train on Wednesday night, according to an NJT representative, who sent the following statement:

At approximately 7:37 p.m. on Wednesday 12/13, a train not in passenger service that was being moved eastbound on the Morris & Essex Line struck and fatally injured an adult male pedestrian west of South Orange station.  There were no customers on board. No injuries were reported to the crew. Morris & Essex Line and Gladstone Branch rail service was temporarily suspended in both directions between Newark Broad Street and Millburn but has since resumed. New Jersey Transit Police are on scene leading the investigation.

Asked whether there was any further information about the victim, the representative said, “That information will not be available until next of kin has been notified.”

Village Green also reached out to South Orange Police Chief Ernesto Morillo, who said, “This case is being investigated by NJ Transit Police, so I do not have any information to share at this time.”

We will continue to follow up on this story.
