Maplewood Chief DeVaul: Overturned Cement Truck on Burnett Ave Avoided ‘Real Tragedy’

Updated 10:30 p.m. with a report from Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul:

An overturned cement truck closed Burnett Avenue in Maplewood west of Vermont Street near DeHart Park early afternoon on May 17. Emergency personnel were on scene.

Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul provided the following report:

“At approximately 1109 hours on this date (5/17/2019), Police responded to the area of Franklin Ave near Burnett Ave on a reported 1 vehicle MVA involving a County Concrete Corp truck. The truck was south on Burnett Ave and attempted to make a right turn onto Franklin Ave.  It appears the attempt to turn the was at the last moment and at an excessive speed. The truck proceeded opposite the flow of traffic when it flipped over onto its side causing damage to a number of things including street signs, grass areas and the sidewalk. The truck driver was reportedly not injured. Maplewood Fire Department and MTS Towing responded to upright the truck and clean up the debris. Representatives from County Concrete Corp were also notified and responded to the scene. There is no reason to believe the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and has a valid commercial drivers license. The driver will most certainly receive at least a summons for careless driving. I cant say enough how lucky we all are. If there was a vehicle traveling on Franklin Ave at the time we could have been dealing with a real tragedy. We are very fortunate there was only limited property damage. ”
