Three incidents stood out in the most recent Maplewood Police report:

  • A man walking through Memorial Park just before 11 p.m. on Sept. 19 was approached from behind and knocked to the ground by three men, said Sgt. Christopher Black. One of the men displayed what the victim believed to be a handgun before stealing his backpack and fleeing, said Black. The man walked to police headquarters and reported the incident.
  • A Yale Street resident reported seeing a man with his genitals exposed in the resident’s backyard at around 10:20 p.m. on Sept. 17, said Black. The man ran away upon being spotted. He is described as a dark-skinned black male about 5’8″ tall, with a slightly muscular build, wearing light blue jeans and a red belt. Officers responded to the area and conducted an extensive yard-to-yard search, said Black, but were not able to find any suspects. Detectives are investigating the incident.
  • Maplewood Police arrested two men for allegedly tearing a chain off a woman’s neck in the Extra Supermarket parking lot shortly after 5 p.m. on Sept. 18. The men then ran toward Kerrigan Blvd in Newark, said Black. After an intensive investigation by the Detective Bureau police arrested Leonard Larue, 49 of Newark and Joseph Johnson, 45 of East Orange. Both men were also charged with an identical incident that happened on September 3, Black said. Police confiscated the vehicle used in both incidents.
