South Orange Police arrested an 18-year-old Newark man who allegedly used a shotgun to rob a Hillside Place man in his driveway Sunday night.

Police arrested the man on Monday at around 3:45 p.m. after detectives determined he was involved in the robbery, which took place Sunday at approximately 8:25 p.m., said Chief James Chelel. The Hillside Place man told police he was sitting in his car in his driveway when three men wearing dark colored hooded sweatshirts approached him. One of the men pointed the shotgun at him and ordered him to get out of the car and lay on the ground, said Chelel.

After taking the man’s iPhone, the three fled on foot and entered a vehicle on West Montrose Ave. The man was not injured, said Chelel.

With assistance from the Newark Police, the Essex County Sheriff’s department and the New Jersey State Police, police arrested the man on Fabian Pl. in Newark after Capt. Kyle Kroll saw him driving a white Honda Accord that was involved in another shotgun robbery in Newark. The man was charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a weapon, said Chelel.

The suspect is believed to be responsible for several shotgun robberies throughout Essex County, said Chelel. “That is being looked into,” he said.
