The South Orange Fire Department responded to a 911 telephone report of a structure fire on North Wyoming Avenue on Tuesday, December 2, at 06:11 a.m.

According to a report from South Orange Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Sullivan:

Arriving units found a working fire on the second floor of the residence. Two non-ambulatory senior citizens were rescued from an interior stair landing and removed to the exterior of the home by firefighters. One juvenile was escorted out of the house as well. The occupants were checked by local EMS personnel and were found to be without injury or condition warranting further medical attention.

Mutual Aid to this structure fire was provided by the City of Orange Fire Department and the Township of Maplewood Fire Department. Each provided an engine company and firefighters to assist with suppression and overhaul efforts.

Investigators from the South Orange Fire Department determined the cause of the fire to be accidental in nature due to a heat producing device in close proximity to combustible materials in a second floor bedroom.
