On Monday, October 26, Village President Sheena Collum swore in the South Orange Police Department’s latest hire — Patrol Officer Darrell Terry Jr.

In introducing Terry, South Orange Police Chief James Chelel said, “Any time a police officer is hired, I go through their background application, and two things came to mind when I saw Darrell Terry.” Chelel then cited Terry’s “outstanding education” and his local roots. Chelel noted that Terry is a 2006 Columbia High School graduate, a 2010 Penn State University graduate, and is currently working towards a masters degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck.

Regarding Terry’s pursuit of that degree, Chelel said, “I think that’s something that we should encourage here in law enforcement.”

Chelel also thanked the Board of Trustees, Village Counsel Steve Rother and Village Administrator Barry Lewis “for having the foresight to hire Darrell Terry.”

Watch Terry’s swearing-in at 1:04:00 on the meeting video.
