A NJ Transit bus driver who was among 5 people injured today in a crash in Maplewood has died of his injuries, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. and was a head-on collision between the NJ transit bus and a garbage truck. The collision took place outside the NJ Transit bus depot on Springfield Avenue near Chancellor Avenue. Police closed Springfield Avenue for nearly four hours in the aftermath of the crash.
According to a release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office:
The bus driver was the sole occupant of the bus and the garbage truck was occupied by the driver and three passengers. The bus driver was transported to University Hospital in Newark and he was pronounced dead at 5:48 pm, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.
The bus driver has been identified as Larry Wiley, age 65. The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy at the NJ Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. The driver and passengers of the garbage truck were also transported to University Hospital where they were treated for non-life- threatening injuries.
This incident is being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Crash and Fire Investigative Unit and the Maplewood Police Department. the cause of the crash is under investigation.
