There will be some new faces in the Columbia High School Guidance Department when school reopens this fall; and some familiar ones will be gone.
The department sent the following message recently in its regular newsletter:
We would like to share with you some changes for the 2019-2020 school year in the Guidance and Counseling Office:
Deborah Conway has retired after many years of service to our SOMSD students. We have recommended Jennifer McDowell as Ms. Conway’s replacement. Ms. McDowell most recently has been at South Orange Middle School as a social studies teacher.
Falynn Balassone will be out on maternity leave until Thanksgiving. She is being covered by Antoinette Daly. Ms. Daly worked as an intern last year at South Orange Middle School.
Ms. Mooney-Chavez will be out on maternity leave in December and return in the new year.
Stephanie Renelle will be out on maternity leave until the holiday break. She is being covered by Karissa Handler who recently completed her guidance certification.
Sophia Kenny has secured employment at a neighboring school district. We have recommended Yolande Fleming, a current SOMSD employee and teacher at Clinton School, as Mrs. Kenny’s replacement.
We will be sending out contact information for our new and replacement counselors very soon and will offer a meet and greet evening early in the school year.
Village Green reached out to SOMSD Asst. Supt. of Administration Dr. Gayle Carrick and Interim Guidance Director Scott White for more clarification.
“Mr. White has been rehired until April,” said Carrick. “We will begin a search late fall. Mr. White and I have already been discussing his replacement and CHS Guidance Dept. plans.”
White, who was hired in April 2018, said his last day would be April 24.
