From the South Orange – Maplewood School District:

Columbia High School Senior Steevens Delices was the recipient of the Math Department’s Edison Award on Senior Recognition Night.

The award is named after Edison due to his famous quote – that genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. Steevens is the first CHS student ever had to start out in level 2 math and successfully complete AP Calculus. Judging by the ovation that he received at Senior Recognition Night, he is an inspiration to his peers as well as his teachers and administration.

In the picture, Steevens is surrounded by his father and his past teachers. His father and his teachers are helping Steevens hold his trophy – a circuit with a switch connected to a light bulb. This is a metaphor for how his parents and teachers are there to support him, but ultimately, it was his hard work and persistence that threw down the switch that enabled him to succeed.
