From CHS Robotics Team supervisor Allan Tumolillo:

The Columbia High School Varsity Robotics Team (one of three teams at CHS) will compete in the New Jersey State Championship Tournament at NJIT on Sunday, February 28.

This is our 4th visit in six years to the tournament, capturing the NJ State Championship in 2011 and 2013, when two CHS teams shared the championship — the first high school in New Jersey to do so. In 2014 the Club received the Inspire Award from US FIRST — an award given to the best all-around club in the state. In 2011 and 2013, the team went on to St. Louis for the World Championship Tournament and took 2nd place in World (2011) and reach semi-finals in 2013. In 2014, US FIRST instituted the Eastern Super-Regional where we competed.

We have an very strong group on the varsity team and there are no seniors on that team! So they all come back. Our JV team just missed getting into the State Tournament and our Freshman Team had a really outstanding season.

Next year, I expect four teams at CHS — one each for Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. These are really great kids.

In May — date to be announced — we will have a “Tech Night” at CHS, and we will invite the middle school 8th graders and 7th graders to see what kind of tech clubs we have at CHS: Robotics, Flight Club (drones), CyberPatriots (cyber security club), Programming Club, Girls Who Code and a few others.

In the meantime, Sunday is a big day!
