To the South Orange Maplewood Community:

I am so pleased to finally be here on-site! I very much enjoyed the time I spent here in April, and enjoyed meeting many of you and starting to get to know this very special community.

As we begin our work together, I want to honor what we all have in common – the desire and commitment to work towards the best for each and every child. We are a very good school system, and there are many things to celebrate in our schools. I have heard of numerous impressive accomplishments of our students and staff, and look forward to discovering even more in the weeks and months to come. Many students are doing very well in our schools – they have found their passions and are supported in developing them even further.

At the same time, as we think about the future, it is clear that there is a great deal of work we must do to help students prepare for the world which they will enter into as they leave to pursue college and career beyond SOMSD.

Together, we will build on the things which we are already doing well. And together we will also look at ways we can maximize our resources and our capacities – both material and human – to make sure that we are reaching every child, and helping each and every student discover and develop their propensity.

So I start this year with you with a purposeful intent to innovate – to find creative solutions to the challenges we face here in SOMSD, and to help our students develop the capacity to be innovators themselves.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and look forward to meeting you in September!

Sincerely,

John J. Ramos, Sr., Ed.D.
