Maplewood Middle School will be holding its inaugural Poetry Slam event and fundraiser at Pimento Grill on Springfield Avenue on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 5-7 p.m.

“Two of our young, new teachers, Alyssa Schlatman and Steve Rosefort, dreamed up this idea and contacted Pimento Grill, which was thrilled to work with us on this event, even going so far as to donate 10% of the evening’s proceeds to our school,” reported MMS-Home School Association Co-President Alan Stephenson.

Any MMS student can perform a poem of their choice (contact Schlatmann at aschlatm@somsd.k12.nj.us). If you’ve seen any of MMS’s in-school poetry slam events, you’ll know there’s a lot of talent in the school and these kids know how to deliver a thrilling performance.

Meanwhile the greater community is invited to enjoy the reading of poems, songs and excerpts by the students. Pimento Grill is donating 10% of the day’s earnings to MMS as a fundraiser — whether take-out or dine-in.

The Poetry Slam is co-sponsored by the Maplewood Middle School-Home School Association.

Pimento Grill is located at 1908 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, NJ.
