One of the greatest aspects of the annual Newstead 5K race, coming this Saturday, September 20, is the t-shirt.

Sure, the race is almost always graced by spectacular late summer weather, it winds its ways through the beautiful streets of the hilltop Newstead neighborhood, and it attracts loads of spectators to cheer you on.

The Newstead 5K also raises money for a good cause, the Achieve Foundation, which “raises funds to promote exemplary public education for all students and educators in the School District of South Orange and Maplewood.”

But some racers run the Newstead 5K just for the t-shirt.

After the first few years on a white background with various logos, Newstead 5K organizers settled on their signature footprint logo but changed things up yearly with various colors — both for the logo and the shirts.

Purple, red, orange, chartreuse, apple green, and a colonial blue have been featured as t-shirt colors.

What’s the color this year? Will pink finally make an appearance?

Race founder Helen DuBowy isn’t saying. But what she will reveal is that the shirt material is going from cotton to that fabulous wicking polyblend that you find in all high-end sports shirts nowadays.

Those who are registered will receive an email shortly detailing hours for packet and t-shirt pickup at the Sneaker Factory in Millburn this Thursday and Friday.

If day-of registrants want a t-shirt, they’ll need to be early risers. DuBowy suggests getting to the race starting line at South Mountain Annex, 112 Glenview Road, South Orange, NJ, no later than 8 a.m. Otherwise, the t-shirts will be long gone!
