From Kean University:

The New Jersey Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics (NJCSTM) at Kean University is partnering with Sanofi Foundation for North America, to provide immersive research experiences for students interested in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers through the Group Summer Scholars Research Program (GSSRP). GSSRP is a summer research experience that allows students to work collaboratively with faculty and staff on biology, bioinformatics, astrophysics, medicinal chemistry, and drug discovery research. The Sanofi Foundation scholarships will fund GSSRP scholars over the course of the program to help further their education and pursuit of STEM careers.

“Kean’s GSSRP seeks to enhance the success and retention rates of students majoring in science and mathematics by engaging young scholars in the research process early, creating long lasting relationships with faculty and other students, and building confidence through research achievements,” said Keith Bostian, dean of NJCSTM.  “We are very appreciative of Sanofi’s support and involvement in establishing this very innovative program.”

Sanofi is committed to a more open and productive research and development model. With that commitment in mind, Sanofi is collaborating with Kean University to provide this innovative opportunity for science students to have an authentic research experience.

“The GSSRP further enables students to engage in and develop a true appreciation for the scientific research and discovery process by contributing firsthand to the acquisition of new scientific knowledge,” said Michael Tocci, Associate Dean of NJCSTM and GSSRP Program Coordinator.

The Group Summer Scholars Scholarship award recipients are Celia Frederico of Belleville, N.J.; Leiby Deutsch of Clifton, N.J.; Joshua Bruce-McKenley of Elizabeth, N.J.; Sarah Ortiz of Maplewood, N.J.; Eileen Wang of Morris Plains, N.J.; Mikaela Rosa of Glen Rock, N.J.; Brenda Okereke of North Plainfield, N.J.; Caroline Ugoaru of Rahway, N.J.; and Ronak Ratel and Isabella Pabon of Roselle Park, N.J.

These scholarship recipients have spent the summer working closely with faculty mentors on intensive research projects. The GSSRP helps students forge strong peer networks, enhancing professional development and providing gateways to career success.

Kean’s GSSRP is open to talented students from across the region interested in STEM fields. For more information about the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics and the Group Summer Scholars Research Program, visit www.kean.edu/njcstm or e-mail njcste@kean.edu.
