Did you watch the Tony Awards with your kids last night? (Congrats, by the way, to Maplewood’s Kristen Harris, stage manager of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which won Best Play!)

Or were your kids inspired by the award-winning Columbia High School production of Ragtime? How about the recent amazing productions from Maplewood Middle School for The Wizard of Oz and South Orange Middle School for Once Upon a Mattress?

Even the 5th grade musicals in this town are impressive. The truth is: Standards for theater are high in our towns.

“Because we are so close to New York, I think people look to the city for the highest quality training programs for their kids in the arts,” says Rylee Card of Class Act Performing Arts Studio, which offers training and summer camps for kids.

“But South Orange-Maplewood is home to so many artists at the top of their fields. We want to connect the upcoming generation of theatre-lovers and future performers with the industry professionals who live right here in their community.”

Here is a quick roundup of three South Orange-Maplewood summer theater camps for your kids:

Class Act Performing Arts Studio

Class Act Performing Arts Studio at 128 Irvington Avenue in South Orange offers three musical theatre-based summer camps:

  • Broadway Babies (ages 3-6),
  • Spotlight Sensations (ages 7-13) and
  • C.A.S.T. (Class Act Summer Theatre, ages 10+)

The C.A.S.T. camp is new this year and will feature workshops with Broadway casting directors, performers etc. while rehearsing and putting up a full scale production of LEGALLY BLONDE. More detailed info may be found on the website, ClassActPAS.com or in the flier below. Call 973.789.0191 or email office@classactpas.com.

InterACT Summer Theater Camp

In this fun-filled drama camp, children will learn acting, play writing and other fundamental theater skills. Working as an ensemble, the children will collaborate to write, create and design their own original theater piece, which will be performed for an audience on the final day of camp. Included in the camp will be a workshop with special guest artist from the professional theater world.

This camp will take place from July 13-24, 2014. Children may register for one or two weeks of camp. Each week will have a similar format, but two different themes. Week 1- Courage; Week 2- Strength.

All campers must be signed in and out every day by a parent or guardian. Participants should bring a snack, water bottle, and lunch. Activities will take place inside the Baird and in/around Meadowland Park.
