Maplewood couple Indira Villalobos-Starr and Silas Starr debuted their exquisitely curated Toy Division on Saturday, June 16. The minimalist storefront shop at 101 Baker Street features an array of children’s toys, art, and home décor, which will also carry a selection of locally-based makers.
Villalobos-Starr has been in the toy business for five years. “Going to trade shows has allowed me to meet makers and learn about brands I really admire,” she said. Along with the cool Maileg Toys and Kikkerland wind-up creations, expect modern quilts and textiles from the local company Little Colley Designs.
Villalobos-Starr made sure a visit to Toy Division won’t break a parent’s bank. “We know that kids sometimes can have three birthday parties in one day,” she says. “62 percent of our toys are $20 or less.”
And the store’s name will surely make a post-punk music aficionado grin.
“I’m from Venezuela and didn’t grow up listening to them,” said Villalobos, who smiled when we asked her if she was a big fan of the band Joy Division. “We were brainstorming with friends about a name and we loved it. It sounds like a larger corporation, which is funny. We’re a small, local shop.”
Toy Division is open from 10:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays-Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. Closed Mondays. Gift wrapping is free of charge. The store’s website is still under construction; however, you can visit their Facebook page.
