Enjoy an evening of Scottish inspired food, drink and dancing at the inaugural Maplewood Burns Night at The Woodland on February 6 from 7-11 p.m. Enjoy a three-course meal (haggis included), open bar, music and dancing. Black tie is preferred — and kilts are optional!

The event is sponsored by The Pipers Cove, The Balvenie Single Malt Whisky, CKO Maplewood and St James Gate.

Tickets are available online, and proceeds will benefit the Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood, which raises funds to promote exemplary public education. Achieve pays for classroom grants, tutoring, professional development and pilot programs for new initiatives.

“As parents of two elementary school children and a pre-schooler in the area, we fully support Achieve’s objectives, including fostering equal educational opportunities for all children, advancing best teaching practices and improving,” said organizer Adrienne MacWhannel.

What is a Burns Night, you ask? MacWhannell explains:

“Burns Night is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet’s birthday, 25 January. While there will not be time for all of the traditions, haggis will be available to taste (the menu also includes a smoked salmon appetizer, chicken Bonnie Prince Charlie, and cranachan dessert), a Ceilidh band will play Scottish music and lead us in the dancing, and men are encouraged to wear kilts!”

MacWhannel and her husband, Piers, met at Edinburgh University, Scotland where they enjoyed many Burns’ Nights. They wanted to organize a different kind of fundraiser for SOMA, and give people an evening where they can dress up, taste delicious food, catch up with friends and try Scottish dancing — on a dark winter’s night and for a good cause.
