Achieve/Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative Celebrates Talented Student Musicians

From the Achieve Foundation and Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative:

On the morning of November 28, there were some very warm hearts in the Columbia High School cafeteria as seven teacher-nominated high school students excitedly accepted their 2018-2019 scholarships for private music instruction and/or professional grade instruments.

Awards went to:

  • Elorm Afor-Agbanu, Grade 9, Percussion instruction
  • Ori Ben-Ari, Grade 11, Clarinet instruction
  • Lindsey Camara Grade 12, Flute instruction
  • Sheldon Dohman, Grade 11, Violin instruction
  • Kimberly Dorvil, Grade 11, Cello instruction
  • Mikayla Montano, Grade 11, Violin instruction
  • Michley Nelson, Grade 9, Viola instruction

This is the fourth year of Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative (VPMI) scholarships being awarded. Ms. Pollock thanked the Achieve Foundation and donors and shared words of encouragement to the students:

We place NO musical expectations on you with this award – we only hope that you feel loved and worthy of this award, which has been brought to you through you hard work and dedication.

Supervisor of the Arts, James Manno, stated that the partnership between the Pollocks, Achieve and the school district was like a giant “hug, embracing these students” and that all the parties involved were thrilled to help make this opportunity a reality for the students.

In addition to Mr. Manno, representatives and board members from Achieve, and CHS Principal Dr. Kalisha Morgan, some significant supporters and donors were in attendance, including members of the Pollock Properties Group and the founders of the SOMA Brewing Co., who recently donated $7,500 to the initiative after their successful Oktoberfest at the Woodland inaugural event.

Almost 40 scholarships have been awarded since the inception of the Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative, which was founded in partnership with the Achieve Foundation in January of 2015 to help:

  • Repair/add to the Music Instrument Inventory for the entire SOMA School District.
  • Provide scholarship funds to in-need students, for the rental of band/orchestra instruments.
  • Provide private music instruction and instruments to prodigious students, who are nominated by their music teachers.

Don’t Miss the Upcoming Holiday Concert on December 7

The next fundraising effort is a Holiday Concert with Broadway’s “Charlie Pollock & Friends”, as they entertain with classic carols and cheer.  Sponsored by the Pollock Properties Group, the concert features festive songs like “All I want for Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” “Joy to the World,” “The Little Drummer Boy,” “O Holy Night,” “Run Run Rudolph” and more.  This incredible rock band brings down the house with magical orchestrations, incredible voices and a whole lot of fun. Artists scheduled to appear are SOMA’s own Charlie Pollock (seen on the Good Wife, David Bowie’s Lazarus), Kevin Kern (Wicked, Les Mis) and Sebastian Arcelus (Madame Secretary), along with Rema Webb (Lion King, Margaritaville), MK Morrissey (Wicked), Meg Zervoulis and Grammy nominated Jason Loughlin.

The event is FREE and family friendly, and all donations go toward the Achieve Foundation‘s Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative.
