General Store by Work and Play ( introduces a new way to shop your favorite local stores, adding 15 South Orange-Maplewood storefronts to the e-commerce platform. Beloved shops such as Kitchen a la Mode, Sadie’s, Toy Division and Sparkhouse Toys join 100 other local makers, artists and businesses now offering their wares, experiences and services on the site.

“I’ve been so wanting to set up my own e-commerce site,” said Ben Salmon, owner of Kitchen a la Mode in South Orange. “As a small business owner, I try to not reinvent the wheel whenever possible. General Store’s infrastructure fits my needs, and the critical mass of other stores and makers offers Kitchen a la Mode a platform for more success in online retailing than having my own single site.”

General Store, whose mission is to help traditional retailers and artisans expand their revenue streams by offering 24 hour online access, has also announced the new “Store-to-Door Express” feature, with a quarter of the site’s retailers (including all of the independent storefronts) offering two-day delivery options straight to consumers’ homes.

“I’ve ordered a number of items from General Store, and many were delivered by the maker or business owner themselves. It was so lovely to chat with the person who actually created the art I purchased! It gives me a much greater connection to the piece,” commented Maplewood resident Michelle Sullivan.

A wide range of vendors and products are available; from a hip hop dance class and massage appointment to a birthday party gift and the latest season’s clothing. Need a last minute host gift? Download a gift card to a favorite store, like Perch Home or Kamaya Kama.

“I love that [General Store] makes local shopping so much easier. If we all devoted even 20% of our online shopping to this site, it would be such a boost to our local maker and retail economy,” said South Orange resident Catherine Cronin.

The complete list of local storefronts that have joined General Store to date is as follows:
