A beautiful home with a very special story is on the market in Maplewood.
Maplewood resident Ryan Burbank was paralyzed from the chest down in a swimming pool accident in July 2012 at the age of 18. In 2013, the NBC home improvement show “George to the Rescue,” with the help of a number of local residents, renovated the Burbank’s home on Boyden Avenue to open up the cramped first floor layout, modernize the amenities and level the sunken living room.
The changes made it much easier for Ryan to navigate the home in his wheelchair — and also created a more modern and attractive home.
Additionally. community members have rallied around the family to help raise funds for Ryan’s rehabilitation and equipment. Ryan’s dad Eric is the beloved former director of the Maplewood Department of Public Works. Ryan’s mom Carolyn is equally beloved in her job as a special education teacher in the Millburn School District.
But now the Burbanks plan to depart Maplewood.
“They are selling their home and moving to Florida,” reported realtor Carol Velez Fardin of Keller Williams Midtown Direct, who said that Florida provides a more wheelchair friendly lifestyle and favorable climate for Ryan. Fardin said that the Burbanks have found the decision “bittersweet” but that she feels “fortunate” that the Burbanks asked her to list the home for the family.
Village Green will continue to follow this story and post any plans to throw a send-off party for the Burbanks. Meanwhile, we’d like to help the Burbanks get a good price for their home.
The 5-bedroom home at 19 Boyden Avenue has 3 full bathrooms and is listed for $549,000.
