Michelle Bradley of Java’s Compost

What town do you live in? West Orange

Where did you live before that? Maplewood by way of the LES.

What do you do? My husband and I just started our start-up, Java’s Compost. Our tagline is “don’t waste your waste” which couldn’t be more true. We educate people about the benefits of composting their food scraps and even have a service that will do it for them. There’s a lot of resistance about composting which I totally get. Fears of smells and rodents prevented me from doing it for years but now I am totally hooked and think everyone should be doing it. Our goal is to get people to think about “recycling” their food the same way they recycle their plastics and paper. And, by composting, you actually create a valuable product that you can use to enhance your own lawn or flower beds. No more trips to Home Depot buying expensive compost. You can create your own out of what was once considered trash.

What’s your favorite feature of your home? The white walls and extra large windows. We lived in an apartment for 10 years that was spacious but dark. I didn’t realize how much I missed natural light until we were in our new house.

Describe your family: Active and loud. With three boys and one man living in the house, the testosterone level here is what I would describe as extra. Additionally, there are usually 10-12 neighborhood kids in the driveway playing basketball on any given day. My “errands” can sometimes last overnight.

Favorite local place to eat? The Spot in Montclair- great gluten free comfort food. They even have GF funnel cake!

Who/What did you aspire to be when you were little? Madonna- I was a child of the 80’s. Need I say more?

What is your favorite store? 165 in Maplewood. I love the jewelry, handbags and wallets. I can always find something to buy there.

Mountains or Beach? Beach, the smell of the ocean never gets old.

Coffee or tea? Tea
