Perhaps it was the weather. Perhaps it was the cause. But the Seth Boyden PTA enjoyed its most successful Two Towns Turkey Trot 5K and Kids Fun Run to date on Saturday, November 19 with a record number of 5K registrants.

In a friendly competition between the towns, Maplewood came up tops, with the male and female first-place finishers hailing from the southern half of “MapSO” (or “SOMa” if you prefer):

  • First-place male finisher and first-place overall:  Michael Steiner, Maplewood, NJ, age 45, finished race in 19 minutes 8.85 seconds (pace of 6:09/mile)
  • First female finisher:  Elizabeth Athaide, Maplewood, NJ, age 13, 11th place overall, finished race in 22 minutes, 37.37 seconds (pace of 7:16/mile)
  • The first South Orange finisher was a Hugh Bianco, age 51, with a time of 23:34.67  (7:35 min/mile)

Participants came from Maplewood, South Orange, Livingston, Millburn, Short Hills, West Orange, East Orange, Montclair, Caldwell, Fairfield, Union (including second-place finisher Jibran Absarulislam), Springfield, Hillside, Raritan, Mendham, Staten Island, and even as far as Seattle (third-place finisher Carter Mcbride). Board of Education member Stephanie Lawson-Muhammad showed her support for Seth Boyden by running the race (her daughter Jordan, a CHS freshman, came in 23rd overall).

Organizer and Seth Boyden parent Rodney Fontil said there was a total of 256 participants in both the 5K and kids fun run. The 5K total of 222 runners (51 registered on race day) was “by far, the most 5K runners to participate. This was our biggest turnout to date.”

Also notable:  Driver Lindsey headed up local women’s triathlete group Team TRIumph in her Adaptive Running Chair from nonprofit organization Celebrate Love Always, which informs the public about these special chairs for mobility-challenged users and makes them available to these users. Celebrate Love Always is considering a donation of the chair to the joint community of South Orange and Maplewood, to be managed by Team TRIumph.

Sponsors included: Seven Point Wellness of Maplewood, Wilber’s Painting of Millburn, Realtor Susie Adamson of Keller Williams Midtown Direct Realty, Community First Soccer of Maplewood/South Orange, CKO Kickboxing of Maplewood, and Stop & Shop.
