SOMA’s Laurel Sackett Heads to Nationals with Synchroettes Skating Team

Maplewood resident and South Orange Middle School student Laurel Sackett and her teammates on the Synchroettes are joining the top 12 synchronized juvenile ice skating teams in the U.S. at the Nationals in Michigan this week.

The team skates at the Codey Arena in West Orange and will be there from 6-7 p.m. on February 19 for a “big send off” as they head to the national competition. Sackett is the only member of the team from South Orange-Maplewood.

Laurel’s mom, Shayna Sackett-Gable, who teaches math intervention at Seth Boyden School, says that Laurel started on the Synchroettes Beginner 1 team when she was seven years old and now skates 4-5 days per week including very early mornings — even before school at times. Laurel is now 11 and is in 6th grade at SOMS.

Sackett-Gable explained that being on the team includes “lots of travel up and down the East coast.” The juvenile team includes skaters age 13 and under.

Students who are interested should visit the Synchroettes’ Facebook page where the team will be announcing tryouts soon. In addition, all are invited to skate with the teams from 5-5:45 p.m. — before the send off — on February 19 at Codey Arena.
