The following press release is from Newark Academy Minutemen Athletics in Livingston, NJ:

Dagny Slomack

South Orange resident Dagny Slomack netted her 1,000th career point with the Newark Academy (NA) girls’ varsity basketball team during the Boardwalk Basketball Classic tournament in Wildwood on December 30, 2023. Throughout the weekend, Dagny, a senior captain for the Minutemen, tallied 30 points, five rebounds, eight steals and four assists to earn a Second Team All-Boardwalk Classic nod.

“This means a lot to me and I am really excited because it has been a personal goal of mine to surpass this milestone since my freshman year,” Dagny said. “Coach Bona, Coach Mike and my teammates pushed and supported me over the last four years and had an important role in me reaching this goal. I am really honored to be a part of NA girls’ basketball history.”

It is important to note that Newark Academy only played four games during Dagny’s freshman year, making the 1,000 point mark an even more impressive feat. This season, Dagny is averaging 18 points per game.

“It has been a goal of hers since she started her career here at NA that she wanted to be among the elite that have scored 1,000 points here. I am really proud of her, it is a huge accomplishment,” Head Coach Liz Bona added.

Dagny is the fourth player in program history to reach this milestone. She joins current WNBA player Jocelyn Willoughby ’16 (1,707 career points), Sam Keller ’19 (1,029 career points) and Ivy Bethea ’19 (1,022 career points).

Last season, Dagny helped lead the Minutemen to a dominant 21-6 record and the Prep B championship title.

Editor’s note: Although nine NA student-athletes have committed to playing their respective sport at the collegiate level next year, six of which will be going Division I, Dagny is still weighing her options and has not yet met a college commitment.
