As of January 1, 2019, Clyde L. Otis III will be the new Maplewood Municipal Court Judge, taking the reins from retiring judge Stanley Varon.
Otis, a partner at Post Polak Goodsell & Strauchler of Roseland, was officially appointed by the Maplewood Township Committee on December 18. After being introduced, Otis said he was “humbled” and thanked Town Counsel Roger Desiderio for his mentorship which ” has had such a positive impact on my family.” Otis also thanked Varon for “teaching me when I was in Maplewood Court.”
According to his biography on the Post Polak website, Otis has “over 25 years of commercial litigation experience in Federal and State courts and a lifetime of experience addressing the business and legal needs of the entertainment industry. Most recently, Clyde spent over 10 years in the public sector, where he represented municipal entities in legal and business affairs, land use, redevelopment, labor and disciplinary matters, litigation and municipal prosecution.”
Otis previously served the City of Newark as: First Assistant Corporation Counsel, Assistant Chief Municipal Prosecutor and DWI Prosecutor, Labor and Employment Counse, Legislative Director for Economic and Housing Development, and Acting Planning Board Attorney.
“I hope I serve you all well. I hope I serve this community well,” Otis told the Township Committee and the many community members, friends and family assembled to greet him and celebrate Varon’s tenure..
Before appointing Otis, the Township Committee thanked Varon for his more than 20 years of service. Maplewood Township Administrator Sonia Viveiros read a proclamation in Varon’s honor and Varon said a few words.
Varon thanked everyone , including former mayor Jerry Ryan and Ryan Bancroft, the municipal court administrator.
Said Varon, “I’m not going anywhere. I’m still be in Maplewood — across the street.” Of Otis, Varon told the TC, “You made a very good choice!”
