Maplewood Avenue to Be Closed Overnight Sunday/Monday (Nov 11/12) for Milling

Maplewood Avenue from Lenox to Durand will be closed for milling starting at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11 until Monday morning November 12 at approximately 10 a.m. The avenue will be closed again all day Wednesday, Nov. 14 for paving.

Here’s the full notice from Maplewood Township Engineer Paul Kittner:

Please allow this notice to supersede the prior notice issued by the Township’s paving contractor in an effort to clarify our communication for the upcoming milling and paving operations of Maplewood Avenue.

Starting at 8:00 pm on Sunday November 11, 2018, American Asphalt will commence milling operations of Maplewood Avenue at the intersection of Lenox Place with work proceeding through to Durand Road. The milling work is expected to be completed by 10am Monday November 12, 2018. The Township has elected to perform this work overnight to reduce the impacts to the merchants, commuters, and residents.

After milling is completed and weather permitting, paving operations of Maplewood Avenue will commence on or about 9 am on Wednesday November 14, 2018 with striping of lanes and other pavement markings occurring shortly thereafter. Unlike milling, paving cannot ideally be performed at night due to temperature restrictions. The paving will be performed in two phases: Phase 1 will be from Lenox Place through Baker Street to Highland Place. Phase 2 will be from Highland Place through Inwood Place to Durand Road. Access to parking and traffic for each phase of the paving is expected to be available within 2 hours of completion of each phase.

The Village will remain open for business! All walkways will remain open for pedestrian traffic. All public parking lots including Ricalton Square, Baker Street, and the NJ Transit Lot will remain open during construction. The public access way behind the Clarus will remain open. The side streets will remain open with limited closures occurring as necessary to ensure safety during construction activities. Parking will be restricted on Maplewood Ave during milling and paving operations to make the construction more efficient and reduce the amount of construction time. Police Directors will be present to direct motorists and pedestrians.

Regarding deliveries, the Township has designated five (5) temporary loading/unloading zone areas for merchants during construction operations from Monday through Friday next week, including:

  • the north side of Durand Road opposite the Caldwell Banker Building
  • the existing area in the Ricalton Square parking lot
  • the area currently used on Highland Ave
  • the area of the street in front of 104 Baker Street
  • the area designated in the NJ Transit Lot near the Dance Studio (see attached plan).

Please advise your delivery trucks of these areas accordingly.

Once again, we have a hard stop date of November 16, 2018!

We apologize for all inconveniences and temporary impacts to your businesses during this construction. We recognize that the construction has been disruptive. We believe that these extensive infrastructure upgrades and beautification will enhance and strengthen our beloved business district in the long run.

If you have any questions or special needs, please do not hesitate to call my office or the Township. Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

Very truly yours,

Paul J. Kittner, Jr., P.E., P.P., C.M.E.

Township Engineer
