Maplewood Retail Plastic Bag Ban Goes Into Effect July 1 (But Businesses Can File for Extension)

Maplewood’s ban on the use of plastic bags at point of purchase by retailers goes into effect on Monday, July 1, 2019.

Retailers that are not ready to comply can file for an extension, according to Township Administrator Sonia Viveiros (see form below).

Residents and shoppers will face no repercussions at first. However, a 5-cent charge on paper bags goes into effect on September 1. Meanwhile, the Township is trying to prepare shoppers by stressing the use of re-usable bags. In fact, members of the Maplewood Township Committee — including Mayor Vic DeLuca — will be at the Maplewood Train Station on Monday giving away free re-usable bags.
