The Maplewood Township Committee is going to be making some major decisions about circulation and transportation at its December 4, 2018 meeting, approving new lot names and parking time limits — as well as adopting new jitney and commuter parking fees for 2019.
On the docket is Ordinance Number 2933-18 to “revise time limit parking at certain locations within the Maplewood Special Improvement District.”
See ordinance below.
In an email to Village Green, Township Committee member and Parking Committee Chair Dean Dafis explained:
The parking ordinance revised parking limits and parking lot designations in the Village as part of our ongoing efforts to tackle the parking and traffic management issue. Our parking committee’s traffic consultant and our marketing firm have advised us to better market our existing underutilized on street parking, to streamline our parking rules (on street and in lots), to consider reducing parking times away from the 4 hr privilege we currently have in some areas in the Village (in order to move cars around and free up spaces), to rename our parking lots (from numbers to names), to redo our parking map (including on google search) and to do better wayfinding in the Village altogether. These are easy, cheap, and short term solutions to the parking challenge. With the introduction of this ordinance [in November] we’ve begun putting into action one of these recommendations (which have been approved by the [Maplewood Village Alliance] and supported by the Village Visioning planners who studied our parking challenge recently).
With this ordinance we’re limiting on street parking in Village center at 2 hrs from 9 am to 6 pm at all times (excluding Sunday and holidays), at 3 hrs (same 9 am to 6 pm) on street farther away from the center (i.e., on Woodland Road on Beach Place, see ordinance for more). We’re limiting parking in all existing parking lots to 2 hrs (9 to 6) except at Highland and Woodland lots (merged into one lot, “the Woodland lot”) where parking will be for 3 hrs (9 to 6). No changes to existing limited parking restrictions outside of the post office or to merchant overlay zones (at Woodland or Burgdorff) or to commuter parking.
Also, per ordinance, we’re calling the Ricalton lot (Ricalton lot which extends to behind the Clarus, those 4 or so spots by the nice dumpster); the lot behind Arturo’s, Bagel Chateau, Garubo, Jerry Rose, and all of the Village Coffee lot the “Village Center lot.” Baker St (behind Words) [is] the “Baker St lot”.
Also up for a vote at the December 4 Township Committee meeting are increases to the jitney and commuter parking rates for 2019:
