Lorena’s and Verjus, two highly acclaimed fine French restaurants in Maplewood, were recently named to the top 25 Best Restaurants in the state by New Jersey Monthly.

Read the article here, in the August issue.

After a recent expansion that nearly doubled the restaurant’s size, Lorena’s food has “never been better,” according to the article. Singled out is the signature entree, a duo of braised short rib and pan-roasted beef tenderloin.

Though prices are high, “you walk out feeling you got your money’s worth.”

“Lovely, quiet, welcoming” is how Verjus is described. Owners Charlie Tutino (“a consummate French chef”) and his wife Jane Witkin (“the consummate, open-hearted hostess”) are “breathing new life” in the 14-year-old establishment, located on Springfield Avenue.

Year-round theme nights are a “charming” addition; in the summer look for Shore Nights celebrating the bounty of summer seafood and vegetables. In the works: a late summer Farm to Table/Vineyard to Table Night.

Restaurant Lorena’s, 168 Maplewood Avenue, Maplewood, 973-763-4460

Verjus, 1790 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, 973-378-8990.
