Several dozen South Orange-Maplewood residents rallied at the South Orange Train Station tonight to voice concerns about the firing of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the appointment of Acting AG Matthew Whitaker, and the independence of the “Mueller Investigation” — the ongoing Special Counsel investigation into foreign government interference in the 2016 Presidential election.
In South Orange, protest speakers included Lilly Hawkins and Amy Higer of SOMA Action and Maplewood Township Committee person Dean Dafis, among others.
Higer was recently heard discussing SOMA Action’s role in flipping New Jersey’s 7th and 11th Congressional districts on WNYC and NPR here.
Protesters in South Orange held signs proclaming “Protect Mueller,” “Stop Trump,” “End Gov’t Corruption” and more.
The rally was organized by SOMA Action. See SOMA Action’s email call-to-action below.

Dear SOMA Action Community,
I hope you all had a great night’s sleep and woke up to give yourself a pat on the back! To all of you who have worked tirelessly for the results we achieved last night, on behalf of SOMA Action leadership, THANK YOU!!!
Every candidate we endorsed won their race. And the work we did mattered! I’m so honored to work with each and every one of you.
There’s a long road ahead as we continue on with our fight for progressive progressive change in SOMA, Trenton and Washington DC including continued efforts to stop the President’s attacks on people and on our Democracy. And our efforts need to start up again sooner than we may have expected…
As I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Trump fired Jeff Sessions today, and has removed Rod Rosenstein from oversight of the Mueller investigation. But you know what? In our country, Nobody is Above the Law, especially the president. Donald Trump may not realize this yet, but he will soon, when thousands of us get into the streets tomorrow night at 5pm.
Join SOMA Action and hundreds of groups around the country to stand up for the rule of law.
When: Thursday, November 8, 5pm.
Where: South Orange Train Station, under the Gazebo (across from the Firehouse).
What to bring: Signs, chants and outrage.
Let’s stand together as a community and defend the rule of law and our democracy.
You can also Tell Congress to Act. Call our representatives tomorrow to say:
- Matthew Whitaker must recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation.
- Congress must launch investigations into Trump’s obstruction of justice, and Democrats should publicly commit to do so when they take control of the House in January.
Rep. Donald Payne (202) 225-3436
Sen. Bob Menendez (202) 224-4744
Sen. Cory Booker (202) 224-3224
We knew our work wasn’t finished with the midterms. Let’s do what needs doing.
See you at 5 PM Thursday.
President, SOMA Action
