The color orange symbolizes the value of human life. Hunters wear orange in the woods to protect themselves and others. In 2013, teens on the South Side of Chicago asked classmates to honor their murdered friend by wearing orange.
That simple call to action has grown into a national movement – and orange is becoming the symbol of gun safety. Millions of Americans are coming together on June 2 to wear orange and call for an end to gun violence in America.
Here in SOMA, everyone who supports common-sense gun reforms is invited to wear ORANGE in Memorial Park at 7 p.m. on June 2, National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca and South Orange Village President Sheena Collum will speak and we will take a group photo which will be posted to social media to show that SOMA cares.
Our society has lost too many people to gun violence, and it is time to stand up and say “enough.” Please wear something orange and join your neighbors at the hill near the train station in Memorial Park on June 2 at 7 p.m. to show that you care about all the lives that have been lost and that you stand for common sense gun reforms, so that one day we can live free from fear.
