The following is from South Mountain Peace Action:
South Mountain Peace Action of Maplewood and South Orange will host a brief rally on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 6:30 pm to 7:00 p.m. at Ricalton Square in Maplewood Village, to thank Senator Cory Booker and Representative Donald Payne, Jr. for their decisions to support the Iran Nuclear Deal, negotiated between Iran and the P5+1 countries: US, UK, France, Germany, China and Russia.
Representative Payne endorsed the deal early on in the tradition of his father, the late Representative Donald Payne, who was a staunch advocate for diplomatic solutions to conflict.
Senator Booker decided last week to support the deal after enduring an intense lobbying campaign by deal proponents and opponents. In August, South Mountain Peace Action organized a delegation that met with Booker’s Newark office staff. A week later, SMPA also organized a rally outside the office urging Senator Booker to support the deal.
The rally on Thursday, like the rally at Booker’s office is being coordinated with MoveOn.org, a national peace organization which has initiated similar events across the country.
South Mountain Peace Action looks forward to the Thursday rally as an opportunity to celebrate the decisions made by two of our Congressional representatives, something we don’t do enough.
