South Orange Civic Assn. Presents MLK Program and Awards 1/11

The South Orange Civic Organization (SOCO) will present its 45th annual Martin Luther King program on Sunday, January 11 at 3 p.m. at South Orange Middle School (70 Ridgewood Rd., South Orange).

The public is welcome to attend this free program.

The keynote speaker will be Deborah Prinz, executive director of the Achieve Foundation of South Orange & Maplewood, and founder of the Achieve Volunteer Tutor Program. Prinz also is a member of the NJ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and past president of the National Council of Jewish Women, West Morris Section, according to the Community Coalition on Race website.

The organization will present its annual SOCO Beloved Community Award to three recipients who will be recognized for their leadership and service in the local communities and beyond:

  • Melissa Kopecky, director of the South Orange Public Library
  • Marvin E. Johnson, longtime Village volunteer and civic supporter
  • Kathleen Leventhal, deputy mayor and longtime Township Committeewoman in Maplewood.
