South Orange River Day 2018 Returns with Lenape Nation Welcome, Walk, Art & More May 6

From the South Orange River Day & Green Team:

South Orange River Day is an annual, community gathering to clean up our section of the Rahway River and celebrate environmental education and awareness with food, fun, music, and art. It’s a family friendly way to connect with your neighbors and the environment.

It all takes place from 11am – 4pm on Sunday May 6th, 2018 at the Skate House on the duck pond off of Mead St. (N. Ridgewood Rd and Meadowbrook Lane) in South Orange. In addition to the usual food, fun, and music there will also be:

· Lenape Nation traditional welcome
· Basic Birding, an educational walk and bird species identification with Bill Haskins.
· SO Not Plastic information and giveaways
· Composting demonstration by Java Compost
· Participatory environmental art project with Denise Hayden
· South Mountain Middle School River Curriculum projects

This year, River Day coincides with another initiative of the Environmental Commission that SOVCA is co-sponsoring along with the Maplewood Green Team, the Springfield Avenue Partnership and SOMA Action: SO Not Plastic Weekend! We’ve joined forces with all these groups to encourage all of you to go plastic free from May 3rd through May 6th. We’re asking all of you to refuse a plastic bag that weekend if you can, and if you absolutely need a bag because you didn’t bring your own reusable bag, we’d like you to ask for a paper bag. Many of our merchants carry paper bags instead of plastic, but for those who don’t we’re providing paper bags for them to hand out to customers. As you all know, plastic is really bad for the environment, as all the River Day volunteers who clean plastic bags out of the river can attest to. So, please help us help our environment on SO Not Plastic Weekend!
