The Summit of Scary South Orange Houses

One house on Summit Avenue near Garfield Place in South Orange has become locally famous in recent years for its over-the-top and ghoulish Halloween decorations.

It’s the home of Steve and Maureen Davenport. Steve, a South Orange police officer, spends some of his off hours during the month of October creating a spectacular outdoor haunted house. The set pieces change and morph year to year. The zombie baby in the crib is gone; the electric chair persists. Lights and sound continue to grow ever more sophisticated. This year, “actors” in costumes added to the “spirit” of the evening.

The Davenport’s haunted house has served as a fundraiser at times — a few years ago, the Davenports raising money for melanoma research. But mostly it’s a fun destination that kids of all ages from all walks life in South Orange and Maplewood enjoy year after year.
