South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education Second Vice President Johanna Wright met with  Elise Wiener Joy to discuss how the town and the school district can support “Girls Helping Girls Period.”

Elise and her daughters, Quinn and Emma who helped launch “Girls Helping Girls Period” – a campaign to collect feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. Yesterday morning, Board of Education member and former teacher Johanna Wright and I met with Elise to discuss how the municipality and the schools could better support this program through awareness, donations, and distribution. Look – I never thought I’d be talking about tampons, sanitary pads, or panty liners on a Facebook post but if young women under the age of 15 are able to do it with such conviction and passion for the cause then all of us should be able to as well. I’ve volunteered to help and I ask those in the SOMA community to please like their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/girlshelpinggirlsperiod), or offer to volunteer or donate by emailing girlshelpinggirlsperiod@gmail.com. I’m excited for this initiative and I’m blown away by the tremendous spirit of our young people. And… the first male to share this post or volunteer, your next drink is on me – I’d like to believe all the boys/men in our two towns can also support this important cause – assuming they made it all the way through this post
