SOMA People’s Climate March

April 29, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

For those who can’t make the trip to Washington for the People’s Climate March tomorrow April 29, SOMA Action is planning a local family-friendly march and rally.

This is an official sister march to People’s Climate March in Washington D.C.

Participants will gather at the site of the new Maplewood Farmer’s Market on Springfield Avenue between Yale and Oberlin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29. The march will then proceed down Springfield Avenue to the gazebo in Maplecrest Park where there will be a rally. Speakers will include Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca, South Orange Village Trustee Walter Clarke and Maplewood Deputy Mayor Nancy Adams.

On your way to the start of the march, fuel up at the First Friends Bake sale between Yale and Prospect and support immigrant rights.

SOMA Action is an organization of 800+ members from South Orange, Maplewood, and surrounding communities. Members are committed to a progressive agenda of social and environmental justice, transparency in government, and the value of a diverse and inclusive community.

The action-oriented organization seeks to facilitate, support, and initiate progressive political change at the local, state, and national level through peaceful means, including protests, advocacy, and civic engagement.

Environmental Issues is one of SOMA Action’s many committees which reflect its mission and purpose. SOMA Action has been acknowledged by South Orange Village President Sheena Collum as being the driving force behind their decision to pass a resolution to make the township a sanctuary city.

The Voter Rights committee of SOMA action has been tabling in Maplewood and South Orange urging residents to vote.

The group’s Political Action committee was responsible for “From Town Hall to the Halls of Congress” at Morrow Church in March.

SOMA Action also collaborates with other local groups to produce programming. For instance it, along with the South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race and SOMA Addressing Race and Inequality, is presenting “Authoritarianism in American Society” on May 6, from 2-4 at the Memorial Library.
